Registering at the Hospital

All patients must be registered for each visit to the hospital. This includes gynaecological and antenatal consultations, ultrasound examination, blood tests and any other tests that may be necessary. As this process can take up to ten minutes please allow time to facilitate this.

To register for delivery at the Portland Hospital, you will need to inform my PA before 20 weeks and she will make the necessary arrangements. The reservation department will send the relevant forms regarding your admission including methods of payment and a request for you to make an appointment to see a midwife from the Hospital before 34 weeks. Caesarean-sections can be booked up to one month before the estimated date of delivery. For insured patients please provide the hospital administration and my PA with a letter of guarantee before 28 weeks of gestation.

Routine Antenatal care

Professor Jauniaux provides antenatal care and perinatal care for women who are planning to have their baby delivered at The Portland Hospital for Women and Children. Antenatal care including antenatal consultations and ultrasound examinations can also be provided for women planning to deliver in the NHS or abroad. The full antenatal care package includes on average:

• 7 antenatal consultations at around 16, 24, 28, 31, 36, 38, 39 & 40 weeks

• 4 ultrasound examinations at 6-8 weeks (viability scan), 11-13 weeks (nuchal translucency), 19-22 weeks(detailed anatomy scan) and 34-35 weeks (growth & fetal wellbeing scan)

A full antenatal blood profile is taken at around 12 weeks of gestation. This profile includes blood group and antibodies, haemoglobin and platelets levels, glucose level, rubella, syphilis, hepatitis B& C, HIV and toxoplasmosis status.

If you are found to be Rhesus negative and your partner is positive you will need Anti-D injections at 28 and 34 weeks of pregnancy and immediately after delivery if your baby is positive. If you are not immune for toxoplasmosis you will be checked again for you status during the second and third trimester. Blood is taken again at around 36 weeks to check your haemoglobin and platelets level and a vaginal swap will be taken to check for group B Streptococcus (GBS).

If you are not intending to book with me for delivery but would like scans you can have a scan at any time during the pregnancy.

Insured Patients

Insured patients must inform their insurance company of their intention to deliver or have a procedure at the Portland hospital in order for their lever of cover to be assessed.

All insured obstetric patients will need to provide a letter of guarantee to my office and the hospital admission department eight weeks prior to their due date.

Claims to medical insurers for single gynaecological or obstetric consultation will depend on individual medical cover and it is advisable that you check with your insurers before attending your appointment. If you are covered, it would be helpful if you could bring with you your completed claim form and if applicable a GP referral letter.
